An open letter from the Houseparents of Genesis House

Hello,

My name is Donda and I want to share a little of my story with you.  Almost fifteen years ago, I found myself facing an unexpected pregnancy.  The results of that home pregnancy test sent me reeling with every imaginable emotion: shock, fear, anger, sadness, and joy.  I was unmarried and very, very overwhelmed.  Even though I was an adult, I couldn’t bring myself to tell my parents; and, for months, I trusted only a few people with the news.  I felt isolated, ashamed, and alone.

During these first months of pregnancy, I clung to the verse in Jeremiah 29:11 that promises:

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

I saw that promise honored on August 27, 2003 with the birth of a perfect baby girl I named Alyssa Joy, which means, “great happiness.”  Her life may have started as unplanned and unexpected; but, her destiny was to be a blessing and gift to myself and many others.

Several years after Alyssa’s birth, the Lord sent Jeff into our lives.  He made our family complete and continues to commit himself to being a loving husband and devoted father.  When I proposed the idea of becoming house parents at a home for single, new and pregnant mothers, Jeff allowed the Lord to speak to his heart and, together, we are creating a place for women just like you.

Each of us will encounter challenges and trials as we journey through this world.  My story may not be your story; but, there is a hopeful future awaiting you along this path.  Though you may not see it now, weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)

This is an important journey.  There are many decisions to make, and today, you stand at a crossroad.  Many people with offer you advice; but, I’m going to offer you a choice.     The Genesis House was designed to provide hope for you and your child, whether you choose to parent, or place for adoption.  We can support you through both.  Regardless of your current location, or situation, we can help you navigate this road by offering the following:

  • A place of safety. You may be feeling very vulnerable and afraid and we want to provide you a safe home.  Research shows the importance of restoration is rooted in our physiology; we need breaks in order to recover.  Getting away from your normal routine may feel scary; but, it allows you to “reboot,” with clearer focus and perspective on the decision you are going to make.  Jeff and I can help you set boundaries and empower you to lead the life you choose.

  • A place of respite. When I am anxious or stressed time seems to speed up and life feels loud and chaotic.  At Genesis House, we have intentionally created a space for you to relax and think.  We are located in the small town of Edina, MO on three acres that will envelope you in its peaceful serenity.  The large, Victorian farmhouse provides privacy and the necessities are in walking distance in this quaint town.  Genesis House is also a short drive from, and can provide transportation to, nearby Kirksville, Hannibal, and Quincy.

  • A place of encouragement and support for your journey. Genesis House is a place of learning and growing; we offer many resources enabling you to provide for yourself and your child.  The decisions remain yours, every step of the way; but, you don’t have to travel alone.  We are a loving family and community that will lift you up, cheer you on, and celebrate when you step into your hope-filled future.

I would love to speak with you, to hear your story.  We are blessed to call Genesis House our home and we invite you to share it with us.  What is the next step on your journey?  How can we help?

With love,

Donda Miller
